MTN Ghana Foundation Congratulates Voluntary Blood Donors on World Blood Donor Day
The MTN Ghana Foundation congratulates voluntary blood donors as society joins the world in commemorating World Blood Donor Day.
To draw attention to the role voluntary blood donation plays in saving lives and building community solidarity, this year’s World Blood Donor Day is commemorated under the theme “Giving blood is an act of solidarity: join the effort and save lives”. World Blood Donor Day is celebrated every year on the 14the June to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank blood donors for their life-saving blood donation.
Blood is an essential part of the health care delivery system, especially for planned and emergency medical conditions. Yet blood is not always available in a timely manner, records still indicate lack of blood in blood banks across Ghana. It is against this backdrop that the MTN Ghana Foundation has over the years organized its annual blood donation campaign dubbed “Save a Life” to support blood bank replenishment efforts across the country and help raise awareness about the need for safe blood. To date, more than 20,000 pints of blood have been collected since the initiative was launched in 2011.
In addition, the Foundation built and handed over in 2021 a blood bank for the Obstetrics and Gynecology Unit at Cape Coast University Hospital, which is said to have helped reduce maternal and child mortality by 20%.
Commenting on the celebration, MTN Ghana Acting General Services Director, Nana Kofi Asare said, “As we celebrate World Blood Donor Day, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of all the people who have taken over years the initiative to give blood voluntarily. for the sole purpose of saving lives. We appreciate their life-saving blood donation.
“As the world celebrates World Blood Donor Day, I call on all eligible blood donors to donate blood at regular intervals to help save lives.”
In recognition of his efforts, the MTN Ghana Foundation was named the largest corporate blood donor in 2013, the second largest corporate donor in 2014 and one of the largest corporate donors in 2015.
