Neville Bartlett helped save three lives on Wednesday, just as he has done for decades en route to 500 blood and plasma donations. Mr Bartlett, 73, from Baranduda, has achieved a milestone at the Albury Blood Donor Centre, where he is a regular donor. He first donated as a young man, but took a break during his working life as a data analyst. Seeing her nephew undergo a heart transplant more than five years ago only strengthened her commitment to donate. “You walk into one of those critical care environments and realize that the products you’re contributing to are of life-saving utility,” Bartlett said. “Seeing him in the hospital after heart surgery makes me want to come back and give again.” IN OTHER NEWS: Once during an introduction to a donor, a man who had needed transfusions shook his hand in gratitude. “These little things really remind us that there are people who are only here because of blood products,” Mr Bartlett said. Donor center director Sergio De Marchi said Mr Bartlett was the fourth Albury center donor to hit the 500 mark. “We all celebrate it,” he said. “It’s a great feeling that day. ‘Neville is a great example for all of us and we’re certainly encouraging others in the community to come forward.’ The center is now open seven days a week and close to 4,000 people have donated in the past 18 months, many of them regularly.
