Improvements to the National Charities Registry to better connect volunteers and donors
The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) has revamped the research opportunity of its charity registerimproving the way donors and volunteers can connect with their favorite organization.
The new platform was launched at an event in Melbourne last week, with industry leaders and representatives from some of the communities they serve.
Commissioner Dr Gary Johns said the register now allows users to search for charities by cause and location.
“Donors, philanthropists, funders and volunteers can now use the registry to find a cause close to their hearts, while charities can use it to connect with each other,” Johns said.
Jack Heath, CEO of Philanthropy Australia, said the platform was an innovation for the industry that would help groups like his achieve their philanthropic fundraising goals.
“The register is a valuable tool in our quest to increase philanthropic giving to better support Australians in need,” Heath said.
The benefits also apply to charities seeking to collaborate with other organizations, and CEO of GIVIT, Sarah Tennant noted that groups that wanted to collaborate to meet the needs of vulnerable people could connect through the new platform. GIVIT works with approximately 4,300 charities and organisations.
“Since we started, over 4.5 million essential items have been donated by ordinary Australians. We look forward to more opportunities to work with charities through the enhanced ACNC Charity Registry,” said said Tennant.
Tanarra Philanthropic Advisors CEO Lisa Kingman said the platform will help other like-minded groups better understand the ecosystem in which they work. This would help charities chart a better strategic path and identify differentiating characteristics.
“We have provided pro bono advice to hundreds of charities. We ask their councils to identify who is doing complementary or similar work because it’s important to understand where you fit in,” Kingman said.
“Charities on the whole have tiny marketing budgets, so building awareness is a constant challenge. COVID has forced a rethink of traditional fundraising events. It makes sense to seek out like-minded organizations and collaborate,” she said.
